Scholarship for Young Actors

A message from Artistic Director Aaron Craven:

Friends and colleagues,

It’s with great pleasure that I announce the formation of an acting scholarship for young actors.  This new scholarship, consisting of acting training and mentoring at our Working Actors Gym, will be presented to a deserving actor under the age of 25.

I’ll be awarding this scholarship twice yearly in honor of my brother Trevor Craven, who passed away in a car accident in 1986 at the age of 15.  Trevor was an outstanding athlete, an honor roll student and a well known young man in my hometown of North Vancouver. The Trevor Craven track meet is still a yearly event in Vancouver, sponsored by his old track club, The Norwesters.

I’ve had the desire for awhile to create a formal scholarship through my acting classes at The Working Actors Gym. Informally, I’ve mentored and given financial breaks to deserving actors for years, but this new scholarship is driven by a few factors.

First, I wanted to honor my big brother, who I miss more as the years pass by.  Second, I feel I’ve honed my chops as an artist for enough time and with enough accomplishment to feel that I’m presenting an award of true worth.

Third, and lastly, I’ve noticed a climate change in the way acting training is presented and sold.  I find some of the current salesmanship falsely misleading to young actors and demeaning to our profession. So, I wanted to present a good old fashioned scholarship to a deserving young actor, in the classical tradition of apprenticeship and industry building.  No tweets, referrals, or “acting challenges” needed!

The award will consist of a 8 week block of classes, once weekly at The Working Actors Gym.  I’ll also be providing career mentorship as part of the program.  Check out more details on our class through the Working Actors Gym page on this website.
The scholarship is open to actors between the ages of 18-25 who have had previous acting training and/or professional acting experience.
