THE WORKING ACTORS GYM is an acting school based in Vancouver BC, originating in 2001.
Why do we call it a “Gym”? Because our classes mix it up with scene study, on-camera auditions, voice, improvisation — all the tools required of a professional actor. In this inspiring environment, actors can take creative risks and develop their unique voices, while being rigorously challenged.
In tandem with our theatre company, Mitch and Murray Productions, we provide a true hub for local artists in the stage and screen industries.
Artistic Director Aaron Craven is one of Vancouver’s busiest performers and most recommended acting teachers. This weekly workout for advanced actors features a host of professional actors and emerging talent honing their craft.
The class features a combination of scene study, on-camera audition work, voice, improvisation — all the tools required of a professional actor. Class materials range from film and television sides to modern plays, with an emphasis on delivering grounded and authentic performances tailored for the screen.
Known as a busy working actor and generous coach, Aaron runs his classes with a high level of integrity. Cell phones are put away, actors are off-book and the work is fun and intense.
If you’re a serious actor who’s ready to put the work in, this is the class for you.
Previous acting training and an audit of class are prerequisites to joining.

In this set of introductory classes with Kate Craven, newer actors will build foundational skills and understanding of both the craft and business of acting.
After working with actors of varying levels for the past two decades, Kate has developed an 8 WEEK FOUNDATIONAL ACTING COURSE which clearly and concisely walks actors through the process of preparation to performance, while maintaining professionalism on set. Each week covers a new aspect of the business, always keeping the emphasis on developing the actor as both artist and professional, creating firm foundations and acumen
in areas including: *character, *relationship, *genre, *voice, body, mind, *pre set, on set, post set, *professionalism, *agency advice.
Kate has an eye on delivering truthful performances on screen through script analysis, voice and body work and scene study, she also offers insight into in-person and on-tape auditioning, how to find the right head shot photographer and how to prepare for the shoot, how to seek out an agent, personal professionalism, on-set etiquette, and industry advice and pointers.
The final week of the course is dedicated to completing a one-minute demo reel built from class work, which can be used for agency search, or if already represented, to show your team your current work.
Kate offers a superior level of training and a safe space to learn the fundamentals of our art form by creating a calm but challenging environment with a focus on self-esteem and confidence so that all students feel the freedom to explore and grow. A healthy mindset and a respect of self and the creative process will always be at the forefront of the way Kate teaches.

His play Instantaneous Blue had its world premiere with the company in January, 2023 at the Waterfront Theatre in Vancouver. He's also developing a TV series, Yakima, winner of top drama pilot in the Scriptation screenplay contest.
His experience in all these disciplines informs Aaron's approach as an acting coach. He brings a precision of direction and a keen eye for performance, script analysis and creative possibilities to his dynamic classes at The Working Actors Gym.
Kate began her training for film and television in Sydney, Australia with renowned acting coach Sandra Lee Paterson. On moving to Vancouver, Canada Kate found her home at The Working Actors Gym and has been studying with industry veteran Aaron Craven for the past decade, developing both her craft and her teaching technique, drawing largely on the principles of practical aesthetics.
She brings over 20 years of international industry experience (both in front of and behind the camera) to her classes, with broad experience on both stage and screen. A singer and dancer, Kate intertwines her teaching with vocal and body exercises so actors begin to find comfort in breath and movement, and confidence in who they are; not only as an actor, but also in who they are in the world.
Aside from acting and teaching, Kate is also a writer and is in development for over a half dozen projects. She is the Company Manager for Mitch and Murray Productions and produces the company’s annual theatre production alongside her business and life partner,
Aaron Craven.

A note on self-tapes:
If you are requested to tape for a UBCP/ACTRA project, congratulations - the production will provide you with a paid-for self-tape service, arranged by casting through your agent at a taping studio. This includes a professional studio setting with lights, camera, sound and reader at ZERO COST TO YOU.
We STRONGLY URGE all actors to use this service, a contractual privilege for UBCP/ACTRA projects. This right has been fought for by the union and is unique to our jurisdiction.
We believe in coaching an actor's performance. At the same time, we support the ethical stance that actors shouldn't pay to audition (including self-tapes). Additionally, off-camera readers should be compensated for their labour, which they are when actors use production-paid taping services. It's a win-win for performers.
Should you be taping for an out-of-town project or project not covered under a UBCP/ACTRA contract, we will gladly continue to coach and tape you in studio.

"I love Aaron's straightforward approach. His passion and knowledge for the craft are contagious and his coaching skills are so beneficial in the auditioning process.
I was truly impressed with the level of talent. I would highly recommend his training to any actor."
"Aaron has an innate ability to calmly square you up with exactly where you need to go to get into the scene. As an actor with over twenty years in front of the camera, and as a teacher myself, I don’t say this lightly. He’s as genuine, knowledgeable, and as direct as you can get.”
"Aaron is a superb instructor and coach with an immense amount of industry knowledge, expertise and experience. There is no better person to learn from than someone who is as active as he is. I am grateful for his invaluable insight and feedback as well as consistently challenging and pushing me to improve my skills in front of the camera."
"I have so much respect for Aaron as both a coach and a human being. As a coach, he is straightforward, knows so much about the industry, and has a unique way of helping you explore a character in a way that works for the world and tone of the show. Through training with Aaron, I've gained more clarity to my scene study process, and feel much more fearless and confident about my work. He doesn't try to psych you out or manipulate you to reach some emotional break - instead, he offers you the tools to be consistently present, committed, and emotionally open."
"If you want to succeed at something, learn from someone who is doing that thing you want to succeed at. Aaron takes the experience and knowledge he gains from always being on set and imparts that to his students. I always find myself coming back to Aaron’s acting class because he creates a great atmosphere for practicing the craft. He’s practical, very smart and has his finger on the pulse of the industry."
"Aaron creates a safe, supportive and fun environment, giving you the opportunity to work on improv, auditions and scene study. He teaches his students to bring their authentic self to each role creating honest, interesting work. Aaron brings to each class his vast experience and a current awareness of the business as he is successfully crafting his own career. He teaches me skills to get the job and the tools to take with me to set once I book it. The Working Actors Gym has been my home base for many years and I am a stronger actor for it. Thanks, Aaron."
"Aaron has the rare ability to translate something that is so intricate into its simplest form. I have never been to a class in the years I have studied with him where I didn't learn something new about myself. No matter what level you are at, whether you are booking work or not, Aaron will find a way to bring your craft to the next level. No gimmicks or shortcuts, just acting in its simplest form."
"I love how Aaron hand picks the material for each student to match the actual work and audition the individual is actually getting called for. Always keeping it fresh with scene studies, cold reads, improv, audition techniques and current audition pieces, I’ve been more confident in the audition room and booked the work. Thanks Aaron!”
"Aaron Craven is one of the best there is in the biz when it comes to working with established and new actors in the industry. I like to call him the blue-collar acting coach because he’s straight-forward, practical, the meat and potatoes type of teacher that gets results….immediately! There’s never a hesitation to refer any actor to Aaron and the feedback I receive is always positive."
"I was drawn to The Working Actors Gymforits variety of on-camera and scene work. I continue to work with Kate because of the knowledge, experience and diligent care she brings to every single session. With her directorial eye and years of experinece in both film and theatre, it's easy to be influenced by her professionalism and dedication to growth. She's made me feel safe, seen and heard during our time together and I have moved through many of my (rewarding) growing pains with her.
Fun fact: all of my major large role callbacks have been for roles I have coached with Kate!"
Kate Craven is without a doubt one of the best acting teachers I've ever had the pleasure to work with! She does a great job at pushing you to bring more to a scene while still ensuring you're in a safe environment.
I felt so much more confident in front of the camera thanks to her, and I'd happily recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their acting skills!"
"I have learned so much about the acting industry in Kate's classes. She makes sure you get a chance to read for a variety of
characters which I find very helpful because it helps me to get our of my comfort zone
and explore new things. I have learned so many valuable things: filming auditions, how to
start acting professionally, useful warm ups and much more. I very much enjoy attending these classes and can’t wait to continue.”
"Kate is an absolutely amazing
teacher! From the time I walked in to her class to now, I have progressed so much in every
aspect of acting. She has taught me so much, from where to stand in front of the camera, to
helping me understand my script. She has also told me so much about the world of film and
television that I never would have known. With her help, my acting ability has expanded and grown more than I ever imagined."
"Since my very shy daughter started taking the classes with Kate, she has became more confident and much happier. She comes home and tells me all about what she learns in the class and seeing the sparkle in her eyes makes me happy.
I am very grateful that Kate came into her life as a teacher and mentor, guiding her to accomplish her dream.”
